From Pulpit to Driver’s Seat: Confessions of a Taxi DriverLife has a funny way of taking us on detours we never expected. Our very own Chairman, Steve Weatherly-Barton, recently shared his personal journey with the lovely members of the Tollgate WI. In an engaging talk titled “Confessions of a Taxi Driver,” Steve took the audience on a ride through his life – from the quiet sanctity of the church to the unpredictable front seat of a cab.
A Journey of Faith and HealingPrior to his taxi driving job, he served as a Minister with a workload so heavy it eventually took a toll on his health. Realising he needed to step aside to recover, Steve turned to prayer, seeking a new path. That path led him to a rather unconventional interview in a battered old caravan in Lymington. He got the job and began a masterclass in everyday life.
Tales from the Front Seat
The WI members were treated to some of Steve’s most memorable (and awkward!) moments from his taxi days:
- The Quiet Passenger: Steve once picked up a Mrs. Williams and her cat, Henry, from the vet. Trying to be polite, Steve asked, “How are you, Henry?” only for Mrs. Williams to dryly reply, “He’s dead, actually.”
- A Sanctuary of Peace: A Roman Catholic priest once requested a ride to a gay bar. When a curious Steve asked why, the priest simply said, “It’s the only place without there being a fight!”
- A Prophetic Tip: One day, Steve picked up a gentleman who turned out to be Michael Baughen, the former Bishop of Chester. After hearing Steve’s life story, the Bishop offered a generous tip and a blessing: “You are not going to drive a taxi forever.”
Back to His RootsThe Bishop was right. Today, Steve serves as the Minister of the Baptist Church in Gosberton and the Chaplain of Johnson Community Hospital. In his role at the hospital, he acts as a pillar of support for both patients and the incredible nursing staff.
He spoke passionately about how the Friends’ Charity works tirelessly purchasing equipment that provides comfort to patients and makes the staff’s vital work just a little bit easier.
A Heartfelt Thank YouThe Friends would like to extend a huge thank you to the Tollgate WI for their wonderful hospitality and for inviting Steve to speak. We are also deeply moved by their generous donation made in memory of Heather Chambers. Heather was a cherished member of both the WI and the Friends who passed away last year. This gift is a beautiful tribute to her legacy of service and community.
It was a true pleasure meeting you all!
